Bhaktapur Durbar Square, located at an altitude of 1,401 meters, is a unique ancient city. Founded by King Anand Dev in 889 AD, it spans 5 sq. km and comprises 24 traditional localities. Shaped like a conch shell, Bhaktapur—“City of Devotees”—was once an independent Malla kingdom. This golden era gave rise to majestic temples and palaces, leaving a lasting legacy.
The Changunarayan Temple, atop Dhaulagiri Hill (5,000 ft) north of Bhaktapur, is Nepal’s oldest. Its oldest inscription, dated 464 AD, was installed by Lichchhavi King Manadeva, indicating the temple's construction predates that year. The Garuda Pillar symbolizes his devotion to Changu Narayan.
