Celebrating the Chhath festival

byBy Asian Hiking TeamKathmandu, 27 October 2025, today is the main day of Chhath festival. Arghya is offered to the setting sun. For this, devotees have started preparations by placing puja materials on the banks of ponds and rivers in various districts of Madhesh Pradesh and Kathmandu Valley.
Devotees have decorated and placed puja materials on the religious and historical ponds and river banks. Devotees have started gathering at Chhathghat to offer Arghya to the setting sun.
Places of worship have been constructed in various places in Kathmandu, including Gaurighat, Kamalpokhari, Bishnumati, Nakkhu, Gehanapokhari, and Kupandol, in the capital, to offer prayers to the setting sun.
Today is considered the main day of this four-day festival, where Suryadev and Shashthidevi (Chhathidevi) are worshipped. Devotees, who started the festival with the ‘Nahaykhaya’ ritual last Saturday on the fourth day of the Kartik Shukla, completed the ‘Kharna’ ritual on the second day, Sunday.
It is believed that by observing the Chhath fast properly, one will attain the desired results, bring prosperity to the family, and remove all one's sorrows and sufferings.
