Gosaikunda is the site of several sacred Lakes that lie north from Kathmandu between Helambu area and the Langtang valley. The Main Spring of the Trisuli River is Gosaikunda Lake. Gosaikunda has been included in the Langtang National park.
The Gosaikunda area is uninhabited for the most part, but every August as many as 75,000 pilgrims crowd into the area for a festival by a Lake that figures prominently in Hindu mythology. Devotees come to bathe in this Lake and to pray homage to Shiva. There are several legends, all similar, concerning the formation of this lake and its significance. The fantastic view from Loribinayak allows you to see the ranges of Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and Langtang ranges.
Asian Hiking Team's Gosaikunda short trek starts from Dhunche, 1950 meters, the district headquarters of Rasuwa, 4 to 6 hours’ drive from Kathmandu. Two days trekking/ascent brings you the sacred Lake Gosaikunda at 4180 meters. There are fantastic views of the several mountain ranges from a nearby day hike ridge line. So our itinerary is from Dunche, up to Gosaikunda, and returning to Dhunche. However, you can cross the nearby relatively easy Loribina pass, 4681 m, adding 5 days trekking to Kathmandu or combine with the Langtang valley trek within extra 4 days too. Additionally, many, if not most trekkers, do the Langtang trek, climb up to Gosaikunda Lake area, then cross the pass and descend into Helambu to see a very interesting number of Sherpa villages, then bus out to Kathmandu. During the trekking season at least one of the four trekking lodges in open at Gosaikunda and trekking lodges are available on the rest of the routes whether descending through Helambu or more directly to Kathmandu.
