Gorkha is 141 km western part from Kathmandu, birthplace of King Prithvinarayan Shah who founded Nepal, situated on a hill overlooking the snowy peaks of the Himalayan beautiful old palace known as Gorkha palace, & Kalika temple. The Gorkha palace was established in the year 1560, by the legendary King Drabya Shah. From the year 1604 to 1641, the Shah dynasty would become famous and rule over Gorkha. Today, the reminders of this era stand proudly in the form of the Gorkha Royal Palace, the Gorkha Bazaar and Gorkha Durbar. Prithvi Narayan Shah is known for gathering his Gorkha soldiers and battling to unify all of Nepal by taking control of Kathmandu. After his amazing victory, in the 18th century, Kathmandu became the capital of Nepal. Gorkha is famous for Gorkhali soldiers who proved to British India Company too.
The palace dominates the surroundings and is visible from all surrounding areas. It also offers visitors with fantastic views of green valleys and the Himalayan panorama. The place is also rich in terms of medieval architecture. Gorakhnath Cave; the cave of Gorakhnath is situated about 10 meters below the palace. The cave is believed to be the shelter of Gorakhanath Baba (a great sage) after whom the district gets its name. The sage is believed to have been the guide of the Shah Dynasty. It is because of his guiding and blessing that the Shah dynasty could unify small principalities into modern Nepal. Gorkha Museum; Gorkha Museum is situated at Gorkha bazaar. It has a wide range of artifacts and personal belongings of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, along with his 52 feet long chino (birth details). Apart from these collections, it has also on display ancient art, sculptures, coins and several other articles of historical significance.
