Gorkha Barpak Home Stay Trekking

Gorkha Barpak Home Stay Trekking

A unique homestay trekking experience to Barpak village, the epicenter of the 2015 earthquake, offering cultural immersion, natural beauty, and a chance to support local rebuilding efforts in Gorkha.

Overview

Barpak village is located upon a hilltop about 1900 meters above sea level, north of Gorkha, approximately 47 km away from Gorkha Bazaar. Barpak is famous as the village of late VC Capt. Gaje Ghale, who won the highest honor, the Victoria Cross medal, in the Second World War in Burma. He was also decorated with Nepal Tara by the late King of Nepal. There is a local myth that there was a Ghale king who ruled Barpak and the surrounding Gorkha area.

It used to be a trail for salt trade between Tibetans and Newars of Kathmandu in the early days around 1400 BC. During the unification campaign led by the Shah dynasty of Nepal—King Drabya Shah and Prithvi Narayan Shah—they called the Ghale King for peace talks but he was believed to have been tricked and mapped out as animals on the sandy bank of the Daraudi River. Excellent homestay trekking I did a 7-day trek in the lower Manaslu area staying with the locals, and it was an amazing experience! The organizer, Suman, was very helpful and professional when I was preparing my trek. We were able to find an itinerary that was corresponding to my wishes. The guide, Ganesh, was great, and he knew a lot of people in this area who welcomed us for meals or overnight stays and that made the experience so unforgettable! He was also of good company during the hikes: interesting, funny and always happy! I can only recommend this agency!
